About Wandering Moose Fiber Farm

Wandering Moose Fiber Farm started as a dream in 1991 when we moved to a 35acre overgrown farm in the unorganized township of Argyle.  We had moved to Maine seeking enough land to one day be able to farm as more than a hobby.  After owning the property  for about 2 weeks we watched a full antlered bull moose wander across what is now the back pasture.  This was our first moose sighting and we fell in love with Maine and the home we had just purchased.  We began referring to our property as Wandering Moose Farm, so it was only natural to take on the name when I took on the farm as a full time business in August of 2007.

We started our small farm with a small rabbitry and a flock of sheep, mostly Hampshire and Suffolk and one black and one white Romney, just for fun.  It was 2 years later before I learned how to spin wool into yarn and and began spinning anything I could get my hands on for fiber.  As the years went on we started replacing our Hampshire and Suffolk sheep with Romney until they became our only breed. Recently I introduced Registered Miniature Cheviots to my flock as the Romneys are quite heavy and my strength not what it used to be.  I kept two of my Romneys which I will breed to my Mini Cheviot ram.

After 30 years of Psychiatric Nursing I decided I was ready for a career change.  I attended a small business course and decided I wanted to somehow work with fiber.  In June of 2007 I was introduced to the Pygora Goat and knew this was the direction I wanted to go.  By August of that year I had quit my job, purchased 15 Pygora goats and was ready to take the plunge.  We continue to raise sheep  along with the goats and will gradually build our stock to meet the demands.

I have a small fiber operation where I started my business by processing my fiber into 2 oz spinning batts which I sell along with raw fiber, handspun yarns, locker hooked items and knit/crochet items.  This became time consuming as my flock grew and I started to send out much of my fiber to small mills for carding and spinning.  I then hand dye the yarns and roving and sell those along with my own processed fiber and yarn.

I sell Pygora goats and Miniature Cheviot Sheep for pets or fiber animals.  Check out my Pygora goats for any I currently have for sale. The Pygoras are fun to have, being curious animals who love to play.  Read more about the Pygora breed under "Pygora Goats."
